Smart Gateway
The new cruise terminal in Zeebrugge plays an important role in the port's ambitions to become a major player as a "turnaround port" rather than just a "transit port." Currently, the terminal receives about 150 cruise ships annually. The facilities are designed to efficiently handle both arriving and departing passengers, with features like transport counters and security checkpoints. A bistro and lounge are also located on the terminal's top floor.
Display Software
Throughout the stunning ABC Tower, all screens, as well as one large video wall, are managed using our own Belgian digital signage CMS. For both standalone displays and exotic matrices, we provide comfort and speed for creating and scheduling content.
ABC
The ABC building on Rederskaai is a versatile eight-story building in the heart of Zeebrugge. This joint project by Artes Depret NV and Port of Antwerp-Bruges houses a cruise terminal, a visitor center, and several multipurpose rooms.
Environmentally Friendly Initiatives
The terminal is committed to sustainability. A €3.2 million subsidy has been granted by the European Union to install shore power facilities, allowing cruise ships to use green electricity from the power grid instead of diesel generators. This reduces emissions, noise, and the impact on the surrounding area. The installation is set to be operational by 2026, supporting the broader energy transition in the maritime sector.
The goal is to grow playlists into a balanced mix of:
- Travel Information and Navigation
Realtime arrival and departure times: Screens can display up-to-date information on the status of cruise ships, including arrival, departure, and waiting times. Dynamic maps and directions also help passengers find their way to check-in counters, waiting areas, baggage claims, and exits. - Safety and Security Announcements
Security information: Screens can be used to inform passengers about safety procedures such as the location of emergency exits and baggage rules. In emergencies or delays, screens can be quickly updated with important announcements. - Marketing and Promotions
Tourist information: Promotional materials about local attractions, excursions, restaurants, and other services are displayed to inform passengers. Terminal shops can highlight offers and products. - Passenger Experience
Entertainment: Screens show videos, photos, and live images of cruise ships, destinations, and maritime landscapes. Historical and cultural background information about the region is also shared, enriching the experience. - Operational Communication
Instructions for staff: Specific screens can be exclusively used for internal communication and coordination among employees.
This is particularly useful for updates like scheduling changes, captain's messages, or operational details. - Environmental Awareness
Sustainability initiatives: Displays inform passengers about green initiatives such as energy usage and offer tips on eco-friendly travel. - Social Interaction and Gamification
Social media walls: Visitors can share photos and messages, which are displayed live. Touchscreens could potentially be used for feedback. Our software acts as a versatile tool to make a cruise terminal more welcoming, safer, and more efficient. This content not only supports passengers but also contributes to a positive perception of the terminal and the region.
Future Outlook
Developments in Zeebrugge reflect a broader effort to combine cruise tourism with ecological responsibility and an enhanced passenger experience. With these steps, the port strengthens its position as a major hub in the European cruise circuit. Thank you for your trust, Port of Antwerp!
