Cool tactics for hot times: the effect of more sunlight on your audience and hardware

High temperatures can be detrimental to digital displays; they are typically designed to operate between 0 and 32 degrees. However, when temperatures spike for long periods, such as the intense European heat that even reached 42 degrees in Paris last year, digital billboards can experience problems or even stop functioning.

Anti-glare Coatings

Direct sunlight can obstruct screen visibility, making it difficult to read messages, whether it's a menu or an advertisement... you always lose contrast and brightness. By using anti-glare glass on displays, you enhance your customers' experience and ensure they pick up your message clearly and quickly.

Additional Cost Providing Protection

Additionally, anti-glare coatings also protect your screens. They reflect light, improve readability, and keep your digital displays cooler. However, it's advisable to consult with us, as some anti-glare screens may reduce brightness as they act as a filter. This does entail an extra cost, but not to the extent that the screens become unaffordable. So, be sure to inquire!

Customized Thermal Management

If you're concerned about heat damage or live in an area where extreme temperatures are common, consider a software check-up that reads temperatures and hotspots. Manufacturers may add industrial fans to the back as needed. These elements help circulate air better within the displays, stabilizing the internal temperature. Some custom solutions can protect backlights from temperatures ranging from -30 to 55 degrees Celsius. Thermal management provides ideal protection when temperatures fall outside the optimal range. Additionally, a display will preemptively dim the backlight once a certain maximum temperature is reached. This ensures uptime without disruptive cooling noises.

What About Direct Sunlight?

Whether indoors or outdoors, direct sunlight poses the greatest challenge in conveying your message. Direct sunlight not only increases the temperature of the display, but can also create specific hotspots. Hotspots refer to areas with high heat that can lead to permanent damage to the LED screen. This sunlight can cause the liquid crystal cells inside to boil, resulting in a black (permanent!) spot. This phenomenon is known as solar clearing. If the screen overheats, it can also lead to isotropic faults, usually requiring a full replacement of the device. So, position digital signs away from direct sunlight as much as possible. Whether it's within a customized screen housing or under a tent or canopy, this tactic will prolong the lifespan of your device. Ensure active airflow wherever possible.

Good News for Your ROI

As people flock outside to enjoy the warm weather, digital screens offer a unique opportunity to reach your target audience to the maximum at crowded locations such as shopping malls, hospitality venues, public spaces, etc. Digital screens enable advertisers to display dynamic content that adapts to changing conditions such as weather, time of day, and even the crowd at a particular location. This flexibility allows our clients to showcase extra relevant and appealing messages that capture the attention of a more relaxed audience.

With the right approach and some technical care, our clients achieve significantly higher ROI during warmer periods by smarter use of digital screen communication and interactive concepts. And now, let's embrace the vibrant energy of the summer season!
