Indoor LED walls - quality in every format

In a dynamic era of technological innovation, the landscape of digital signage remains constantly evolving. To better understand the role of LED technology and how it is shaping the future of digital signage, we list all the pluses. The perception that indoor LED technology would be available only to the happy few changed significantly in recent years.

What are the Latest Developments in LED Screen Technology?

One of the most significant developments currently being applied is 'Chip on Board' technology. This technology involves mounting multiple LED chips closely together directly onto a printed circuit board (PCB). Because the LEDs are placed close together without individual housings, a higher density can be achieved, improving thermal management.

These LED displays are known for their enhanced brightness, efficiency, and uniformity, and offer additional advantages such as lower energy consumption, longer lifespan, and increased sustainability. This makes them popular for various applications, including signage, lighting, and displays.

What is the Role of Indoor LED in the Next 5 Years?

We know them from retail environments: immersive spaces with LED screens are revolutionizing the shopping experience. Think of virtual fitting rooms where customers can see themselves in different outfits or environments, displayed in lifelike detail on LED walls. This technology not only increases customer engagement but also drives sales by offering personalized and interactive experiences. This is just one example, but there are multiple applications with an impact on the customer experience in various sectors, including entertainment and even the medical field. The versatility of LED enables us to go further with the technology than we ever thought possible. In the past, we were limited to 16:9 or 9:16 formats, but that is no longer the case. Now we can be bigger, bolder, and more creative with our ideas. Screens can create visual 'illusions' by wrapping around buildings, pillars, and corners, creating a 3D perspective.

The Key Advantages of Indoor LED

While classic digital signage screens typically have a lifespan of about 3 to 4 years, indoor LED screens can last up to 8 years or longer. They are significantly more durable than other screen types and are easier to service on-site. Additionally, LED displays can be scaled to much larger sizes and modular formats without compromising resolution, making large-scale digital out-of-home (DOOH) and large window displays feasible. Indoor LED screens are also more environmentally friendly. They feature intuitive technology that automatically switches off when not in use, reducing energy consumption. They can also be programmed to adjust brightness based on natural lighting conditions, optimizing energy efficiency throughout the day. The long lifespan, compact form factor, and eco-friendly characteristics of indoor LED make them an attractive choice for forward-thinking companies looking to enhance their visual communication and advertising strategies.

Challenges and Limitations Slowing Adoption

Regarding the technology itself, there are currently few limitations in terms of LED. It has advanced significantly over the years, offering possibilities that were unthinkable 10-15 years ago. The main challenges, in our view, are the current laws regarding the use of DOOH screens. In some countries, like Norway, it is not allowed to place screens along roads because they can distract drivers. However, it is possible to apply for an exemption. This is partly to prevent normal shopping streets from turning into one big light show with an overload of visual stimuli that does not benefit storytelling. As the pixel pitch decreases (pixels placed closer together), larger LED displays can be created with higher resolution and clarity, even when viewed up close. This opens the door to innovative applications in urban environments such as retail spaces, stadiums, and other public locations where large, high-resolution displays can captivate audiences with content.
